Learn how to use The Racetimer for professional race timing in Manual and Relay modes

Manual Mode Instructions

Manual mode is perfect for single-device timing with 0.01s centisecond accuracy. No network connection required.

  1. Open the app and select "Finish Device"
  2. Position your iPhone at the finish line
  3. Frame the finish line using the on-screen marker for optimal video capture
  4. Tap "Start" when ready to begin timing
  5. Timer runs and video records at 120fps synchronized with timing
  6. Tap "Stop" the moment the athlete crosses the finish line
  7. View results with precise time, then export or save to history

Best Practices for Manual Mode

  • Position camera perpendicular to the finish line for best accuracy
  • Ensure good lighting conditions for clear video playback
  • Keep the device steady during recording
  • Tap stop button precisely when athlete crosses the line

Relay Mode Instructions

Relay mode synchronizes two iPhones for long-distance timing. One device acts as the start signal, the other records the finish. Typical network latency is 50-200ms.

Start Device Setup

  1. Select "Start Device" role from the home screen
  2. Room code appears automatically (e.g., "A7K9")
  3. Share the code with the finish line operator verbally or via text
  4. Wait for confirmation that finish device is connected
  5. Tap "Start Race" when ready to begin
  6. Digital bang plays and start signal broadcasts via Firebase to finish device

Finish Device Setup

  1. Select "Finish Device" role from the home screen
  2. Toggle "Relay Mode" in settings (if not already enabled)
  3. Enter room code provided by start device operator
  4. Wait for "Listening" status confirmation
  5. Timer auto-starts when start signal is received from start device
  6. Check latency badge displayed on screen (typically 50-200ms)
  7. Tap "Stop" when athlete crosses the finish line
  8. Final time includes latency compensation for accurate results

Relay Mode Best Practices

  • Ensure both devices have strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection
  • Test the connection before important races
  • Check the latency badge - lower is better (aim for under 150ms)
  • Position start device where the starting signal will be clearly audible
  • Communicate verbally to confirm both devices are ready
  • Have a backup manual timing method for critical events

⚠️ Important: Accuracy Disclaimer

Relay mode adds 50-200ms network latency to timing results. While The Racetimer provides FAT-grade accuracy (0.01s) in Manual mode, it is not certified for Olympic/IAAF official timing. Ideal for practice sessions, school meets, and recreational events.

Common Issues & Solutions

Video not recording

Check camera permissions in iOS Settings → The Racetimer → Camera. Ensure you have sufficient storage space available on your device.

Relay connection failing

Verify both devices have internet connectivity (Wi-Fi or cellular). Try re-entering the room code. Check firewall settings if on enterprise networks.

High latency in relay mode

Switch to a faster network connection. Close background apps consuming bandwidth. Move to an area with better cellular signal if using mobile data.

Export not working

Check file permissions in iOS Settings. Ensure you have sufficient storage space. Try exporting to a different format (CSV, JSON, or PDF).
