Frequently Asked Questions

What iOS version is required?

The Racetimer requires iOS 17 or later. The app is optimized for iPhone 11 and newer models to ensure smooth 120fps video recording and optimal performance.

Does it work on iPad?

Currently, The Racetimer is designed exclusively for iPhone. iPad support may be added in future updates based on user demand.

How accurate is the timing?

Manual Mode: 0.01s (centisecond) accuracy using iOS CACurrentMediaTime API, providing FAT-grade precision.

Relay Mode: Adds 50-200ms network latency depending on internet connection quality. Real-time latency is displayed during timing.

Can I use it for official competitions?

The Racetimer provides FAT-grade accuracy but is not certified for Olympic/IAAF official timing. It is suitable for practice sessions, school meets, recreational events, and training purposes. For official competitions, use certified timing equipment or The Racetimer as a backup method.

How much storage do videos use?

Video storage depends on recording quality and duration. Typical usage is approximately 10-50MB per minute at 120fps. Ensure you have sufficient iPhone storage available before timing sessions.

Does relay mode work without Wi-Fi?

Yes! Both devices need internet connectivity (cellular or Wi-Fi), but they do not need to be on the same network. Relay mode uses Firebase cloud messaging to synchronize devices over any internet connection.

How do I delete old sessions?

In the History view, swipe left on any session to reveal the delete option. You can delete individual sessions or all app data through iOS Settings → General → iPhone Storage → The Racetimer.

What export formats are available?

The Racetimer supports three export formats:

  • CSV: Comma-separated values for spreadsheet applications
  • JSON: Structured data format for developers
  • PDF: Formatted report with embedded video metadata

Why is my relay connection slow?

Network latency affects relay mode performance. To improve connection speed:

  • Ensure both devices have strong cellular or Wi-Fi signals
  • Close background apps consuming bandwidth
  • Move to an area with better network coverage
  • Check the latency badge in-app for real-time network quality

Typical latency ranges from 50-200ms. If latency exceeds 300ms, consider using Manual Mode instead.

Is my data stored in the cloud?

No. All videos and timing sessions are stored locally on your device using iOS secure storage. The Racetimer does not upload your data to any cloud service. Only temporary relay mode messages (room codes and start signals) are transmitted through Firebase and automatically deleted after session completion.

Can I backup my timing data?

The Racetimer does not provide automatic cloud backup. To preserve your data, manually export sessions in CSV, JSON, or PDF format and save them to iCloud Drive, Files app, or share via email/AirDrop.

What video frame rate is used?

The Racetimer records at 120fps (frames per second) when supported by your device. This high frame rate provides smooth video playback and helps verify precise finish line crossings.

Troubleshooting

Camera permission issues

Solution: Go to iOS Settings → The Racetimer → Camera and ensure permission is enabled. If the option is grayed out, check Screen Time restrictions or parental controls.

Microphone permission issues

Solution: Go to iOS Settings → The Racetimer → Microphone and enable permission. This is required for video recording with audio.

Relay connection not working

Checklist:

  • Verify both devices have active internet connectivity
  • Ensure room codes are entered correctly (case-sensitive)
  • Check if your network blocks Firebase (common on enterprise/school networks)
  • Try restarting both devices and re-entering the room code
  • Confirm both devices are running the latest version of The Racetimer

Video playback not working

Solution: Ensure sufficient storage space on your device. Videos may fail to record if storage is full. Go to iOS Settings → General → iPhone Storage to check available space.

Export not working

Solution: Check file permissions in iOS Settings. Ensure you have granted The Racetimer access to save files. Try exporting to a different location or format (CSV, JSON, PDF).

App crashes or freezes

Solution:

  • Restart your iPhone
  • Update to the latest version of The Racetimer from the App Store
  • Check for iOS system updates
  • Free up storage space if device is nearly full
  • If the issue persists, contact support with details about when the crash occurs
